ShipServ hits 1,000 on LinkedIn!

Today, we hit our 1,000th member on our Linkedin Group. It’s an achievement we’re proud of and represents the amazing growth in social networking over the last 2 years alone. From a standing start we’ve also got 824 Facebook friends and 515 followers on twitter.

We started all of these groups with the intention of generating conversation and increase online participation between folk interested in maritime e-commerce. Whilst we still have some room for growth, we think we’ve delivered on these ambitions.

Back in 2008, people told us social networks don’t happen in B2B, let alone shipping. But don’t underestimate the phenomenal adoption happening around the world. Even the ultra-conservative are sharing photos on Facebook, commenting on blogs and reading twitter. OK, it may not have reached the real mainstream quite yet (a recent survey by ShipServ and ShipCrunch showed 59% of shipping professionals saw social media as a waste of time) but don’t discount social media out of hand.

The value of these social media channels is very closely linked to the presence of your contacts and relationships in these channels. Once they are present, the value increases exponentially. With traffic by shipping professionals increasing at these forums, there is every reason to believe that the value of social media will increase rapidly in coming years.
