ShipServ TradeNet welcomes first shipyard as member

South Korean-based Orient Shipyard has become the first shipyard to join the e-marketplace ShipServ TradeNet to trade electronically with its suppliers.

Orient Shipyard has two yards in Busan and Gwangyang which this year will launch 5,598,000 DWT tonnes of shipping between them. The yards are specialised in building bulk carriers and LNG vessels for German, Japanese and Korean owners.

Gideon Lee, Managing Director, Orient Shipyard, comments: “We are very excited to become ShipServ’s first shipyard customer. From the moment we deliver a ship to a customer, they will know that all the parts in their ship can be ordered electronically.”

“There is a great overlap between our extensive supplier base already connected to ShipServ TradeNet and the suppliers used by shipyards around the world,” says Freddy Ingemann, ShipServ Senior Vice President of Sales. “Therefore we are easily able to provide yards with the same electronic purchasing benefits as shipping companies.”

“This agreement shows the strength of our network and solutions. We have been able to implement electronic purchasing in a new market, i.e. the shipyard segment, within a short time. This not only means an increase in the number of suppliers connected to TradeNet, but also enables our existing supplier members yet again to grow their business”, adds Freddy Ingemann.

The concept of creating an electronic database of the vessel’s parts will be required by future IMO regulations - especially the International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships. These regulations will set new standards for documents on inventory onboard ships with the intention of creating a “digital ship” to follow the life of every physical ship.

Carsten Melchiors, Secretary General of BIMCO speaking at the ShipServ TradeNet Conference 2007, said that such regulations would not only apply to newbuildings but would also concern existing ships that must comply no later than five years after entry into force of the Convention. The regulations will require a complete Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) identifying three types of hazardous material: material contained in the structure and equipment of the ship, operationally generated waste, and stores.

Orient Shipyard is not the only buyer joining ShipServ TradeNet this quarter: recent shipping company sign ups include ASP Procurement Services, Dampskibsselskabet TORM, RKOffshore Management, Sealion Shipping, SMT Ship Management & Transport, and Tidewater Marine, who between them added another 372 ships to the total of nearly 3,000 trading across ShipServ’s e-marketplace and bringing the number of buyers to almost 100.
