ShipServ TradeNet Conference 2007
A call to address the challenges of recycling and their impact on maritime procurement opened the sixth ShipServ TradeNet Conference. Key note speaker Carsten Melchiors, Secretary General of BIMCO, called on delegates to confront this issue which was approaching more rapidly than most people realized.
Future IMO regulations such as the International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships will set new standards for documents on inventory onboard ships with the intention of creating a “digital ship” to follow the life of every physical ship.
Such regulations are not only for newbuildings but will also concern existing ships that must comply no later than five years after entry into force of the Convention. Any goods, containing “hazardous materials”, supplied to a ship shall consequently be delivered with the necessary documentation supplied. A complete Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) includes three parts: Materials contained in structure and equipment of the ship, operationally generated wastes, and stores.

Later in the workshop delegates took part in a workshop discussing the practical issues of this challenge.
The remaining part of the conference focused on The PERFECT MATCH. Presentations from ShipServ customers and partners, panel discussions and interactive workshops provided inspiration on how to improve sourcing and marketing efforts respectively in the future, especially by using online catalogues more efficiently.
A.P. Moller-Maersk and Ashland Drew Marine each presented how they are using ShipServ’s electronic catalogue solutions to ease order and sales processes respectively.
Ports of Call, which has become a regular feature of the conference, gave attendees the opportunity of listening to five presentations on various trends and developments in ShipServ products. These included a talk by Henrik Gram Madsen on how MAN Diesel A/S were successfully using e-commerce in their ship engine business.
In other Ports of Call, delegates learned about ShipServ’s new logistics solution which allows logistics providers to integrate to the e-marketplace TradeNet and receive delivery information directly from shipping companies and suppliers. Other ShipServ presenters showed ShipServ Pages, the online sourcing tool for the maritime industry, and the benefits obtained when integrating your procurement or sales system to the e-marketplace, TradeNet. Finally, delegates met ShipServ’s new Product Development Manager and discussed ideas for future product releases.
The event took place 14-16 May in Copenhagen and attracted 124 maritime executives. The delegates represented TradeNet Members, logistics partners, software partners as well as prospective customers from around the world.
