The challenges of recycling and their impact on maritime procurement

ImageA call to address the challenges of recycling and their impact on maritime procurement opened the sixth ShipServ TradeNet Conference. Key note speaker Carsten Melchiors, Secretary General of BIMCO, called on delegates to confront this issue which was approaching more rapidly than most people realized.

The presentation focused on the perceived immediate consequences for the description of hazardous materials in all components and all materials as consumed on board in the daily operation, including paints, lubricants, detergents etc.

Mr. Melchiors asserted that even though the new IMO binding instrument on ship recycling is still some years away, the realities today require that such inventories should be prepared already today for existing ships being recycled.

Winners of the TradeNet Awards 2007

At the TradeNet Conference Dinner on Tuesday evening, the annual TradeNet Awards were presented to the Ship Owner/Manager and Supplier of the Year.

The winner of the TradeNet Award 2007 for Suppliers was Ashland Drew Marine for their focus on improving data quality and their progressive attitutude to creating customer specific data with the purpose of reducing the length of the order process.

Vroon B.V. won the TradeNet Award 2007 for Ship Owners / Managers for their willingness to work collaboratively with the suppliers in finding the best data solution. The high data quality from group companies makes Vroon a preferred customer for suppliers to work with.
