Newsletter August 2005

Dear Friend of ShipServ:

Today’s companies are always looking for ways of improving their business processes in order to stay one step ahead of the competition.

To measure performance and compare it to industry standards, key performance indicators (KPI) are very helpful. But the simple fact is that most in-house systems lack the ability to track this data, and cannot put the results in context (i.e. compare to others in the industry).

ShipServ’s electronic Ship Supply Management (eSSM) solution for ship owners / managers includes a Business Intelligence Module that analyses relevant trading data across the fleet, and provides this information in a number of predefined reports covering the whole fleet. This is a very useful strategy planning tool for shipping executives, who, like us believe that ‘what can be measured can be managed’.

Yours sincerely,

Paul Ostergaard
Founder and CEO

New electronic versions of IMPA Marine Stores Guide

ShipServ / IMPA Marine Stores Guide Solutions streamlines the communication between ship, shore and supplier, as the use of electronic catalogue data and the universal IMPA product code system allows for accurate specification of marine stores in the procurement process.

With the increasing adoption of electronic Ship Supply Management (eSSM), the Marine Stores Guide has become especially useful for the specification of stores items in electronic trading. If the purchaser includes the IMPA code (already held in his purchasing system) for the required items in his electronic RFQ or Purchase Order, then many suppliers can transfer this IMPA code directly into his sales order system, matching it to the appropriate stock item.

The use of the IMPA Marine Stores Guide in e-commerce has highlighted a limitation of the original paper-based catalogue which is only updated once every 4-5 years. In the intervening period, certain items may become obsolete and others may need to be added to the guide. IMPA has recognised this limitation and will, from now on, release updates to the catalogue on a six-month cycle. These updates will only be available in electronic form or, if you need to check individual new codes, you may use the ShipServ powered Code Search facility on the web site http://www.marinestoresguide.com.

ShipServ is the exclusive source for downloadable versions of the IMPA Marine Stores Guide. The solutions are available as part of ShipServ’s eSSM solutions or as separate products.

Made to measure

Key Performance Indicators (KPI) are quantifiable measurements, agreed to beforehand, that reflect the critical success factors of an organization. Such data can help businesses analyze their operational processes and define their strategies.

According to the PricewaterhouseCoopers Global Data Management Survey of 2001, “Companies that manage their data as a strategic resource and invest in its quality are already pulling ahead in terms of reputation and profitability”.

Most of the data required to analyse supplier relationships and measure processes already exist within the companies. With the right tools it can be used for rapid bottom line impact.

ShipServ offers a Business Intelligence Module that is based on TradeNet data and provides reports on various KPIs. In addition, a KPI Dashboard is distributed every three months benchmarking ship owners / managers’ performance against other TradeNet Members.
