With MSC (Hong Kong) and Meridian Maritime Management joining TradeNet, the number of ships on the platform now totals more than 1,100. Both companies state increased productivity – and thereby releasing resources to focus on more strategic procurement tasks – as a core reason for joining TradeNet.

This reflects an increasing focus on optimizing inter-company processes between trading partners. DNV and ShipServ launch benchmarking study

DNV Maritime Solutions have joined forces with ShipServ to launch the 2005 Ship Supply Management Benchmarking Study.

Ship Supply Management is about providing the fleet with correct spare parts, consumables and services with the right quality, in the right place at the right time in a cost efficient way. Ultimately it is also about keeping the fleet going and reducing the cost of operation.

The purpose of the study is to offer shipping companies insight into how well they are performing compared to industry colleagues, what is industry leading practice, what characterizes top performers and how they manage to be good. The study also offers input and recommendations on how study participants can improve their Ship Supply Management performance.

MSC selects ShipServ e-commerce solution

Mediterranean Shipping Company (HK and China) Limited (MSC) and ShipServ have signed a contract for their Hong Kong managed fleet of 83 vessels to use ShipServ’s web-based trading platform and electronic ship supply management solutions to manage their procurement processes, both on shore and on board.

Mr Kevin Schellack, Managing Director of MSC (Hong Kong and China), had been tasked with bringing the ship management of 83 ships in-house to be based in Hong Kong.

Once the decision to establish ship management in Hong Kong was made, Mr Schellack decided that starting from scratch allowed him to fully utilize e-commerce and he was quick to look for and decide on a total suite of e-commerce solutions. As Mr Schellack was quick to point out: “The right systems to back the right people.”

Meridian turns to electronic Ship Supply Management (eSSM)

Liverpool-based Meridian Marine Management will commence electronic trading via ShipServ’s TradeNet on 1 June. The system, which acts as a trading platform between ship owners / managers and suppliers, will operate over Meridian’s fleet of 37 vessels and include several hundred suppliers.

Meridian Marine’s Managing Director, Mr Alastair Evitt, commented, ‘At Meridian, we strive to offer the highest level of service to our owners. ShipServ will help us to achieve this goal by allowing us to work more efficiently for our diverse and growing fleet. We look forward to working with ShipServ and the TradeNet system toward this common end.’

TradeNet will move the company’s purchasing department from one of fax and e-mail based purchasing, to a fully integrated process which covers the purchase of all supplies. Electronic requisitions will be generated onboard vessels, sent to the purchasing department and then flow directly to Meridian’s suppliers as quote requests or orders. Through automation, it is estimated that the purchasing process will gain 30% efficiency with a great availability of information and no loss of control.
