Newsletter December 2004

Dear Friend of ShipServ,

December is the time for celebrations around the world. For ShipServ it is time for celebrating the company’s five year anniversary. When I try to describe the last five years with one word, it must be: Growth!

Today, ShipServ is the leading provider of electronic Ship Supply Management (eSSM) solutions. We have developed ShipServ TradeNet to be the largest and fastest growing multiple buyer and supplier network and trading platform.

But how do you find an e-commerce platform that is just right for you and your trading partners? To help answer this, you can find a list of suggested selection criteria below.

Yours sincerely,

Paul Ostergaard
Founder and CEO

2004: Growth!

# Dramatic 77% transaction growth
# Succesful USD2.5M financing round
# New supplier solutions launched

2004 marked another year of growth for ShipServ TradeNet, especially as Anglo-Eastern and TESMA decided to expand the use for their entire fleets. Both are making their whole ship supply chain more efficient through a global centralisation of their purchasing platform featuring full synchronisation between ship and shore.

A dramatic 77% growth in trading volume has been recorded this year. At the end of 2004, 30 shipping companies and almost 3,000 suppliers are conducting an annualized 400,000 transactions on TradeNet.

A recent financing round raised USD2.5M of new money from existing and new investors. The funds will be used to develop our sales and client relations groups. ShipServ is currently hiring Sales Managers in Copenhagen or London and Hong Kong.

ShipServ’s focus on customer driven product development has also resulted in two new solutions for suppliers. StartSupplier was launched to allow 100% supplier enablement for any buyer on TradeNet. The more advanced SmartSupplier is a solution based on the latest Microsoft .Net technology allowing suppliers to respond to buyers’ transactions with unprecedented ease.

Criteria for selecting an e-commerce platform

How do you find the e-commerce platform that will provide you with the best business benefits and the highest return on your investment?

Here is what ShipServ believe is essential for shipping companies to be aware of:

1) Neutrality
2) Track record
3) Customer service
4) Shipping software integration experience
5) Supplier base

To measure and manage your procurement process effectively, it is necessary to process confidential and valuable data electronically. A serious conflict of interest can occur if your trading platform is not neutral, but controlled by a party with a stake in the transactions. In such a case, despite promises of the existence of firewalls and other protections there is a risk that the party may, at the end of the day, act in their own self interest. On the supplier side, imagine how Dell Computer would react if a company controlled by Hewlett Packard had access to all of its sales data. The buyer side is no different. Imagine how General Motors would react if Ford had access to its purchasing data. A neutral platform, by contrast, owes its entire existence to the security of your data in the same way that your internet service provider or telephone company does.

The TradeNet platform is such a neutral platform and ShipServ’s core business is connectivity. Many buyers are connected to many suppliers in this secure and efficient electronic environment providing business benefits for all.

eSSM solution provides significant business benefits for OSG

A smooth and successful implementation of ShipServ’s electronic Ship Supply Management (eSSM) solution has taken place at OSG.

Paul Miller, Purchasing Manager, commented on ShipServ’s implementation process and results:

“So far ShipServ has far exceeded my expectations. ShipServ’s electronic Ship Supply Management (eSSM) solution has allowed me to leverage my investment in technology in a way that has profoundly improved OSG’s ship supply management. Our procurement is now significantly faster, more streamlined and more accurate than before.

The ShipServ solution was implemented in a matter of days with absolutely no down-time for our purchasing operations; with on-site and remote support by ShipServ’s very professional client relations team.

As of today, we have e-commerce enabled almost 75% of our eligible transactions with almost no effort on our own side. At the same time our suppliers have benefited from the same professional service, including the choice of four different ShipServ supplier solutions to meet their e-commerce needs, starting with a free entry-level solution through a full integration into their ERP system.

In my mind, ShipServ TradeNet is the most viable way for the maritime industry to achieve the benefits of e-commerce in a reasonable time frame. Any attempts to create ‘quick-and-dirty’ solutions only delay the industry’s progress towards a unified e-commerce standard.”
