Newsletter April 2004

View from the Bridge

Dear Friend of ShipServ,

Welcome to another edition of the ShipServ Newsletter. These are exciting times for maritime e-commerce and ShipServ – since our last newsletter in November transactions on TradeNet have gone up 36%. Just like in many other industries, e-business in shipping is turning out to be as big or bigger than anticipated – only a few years delayed. With our up-coming launch of a complete e-Supplier Relationship Management (eSRM) solution that allows shipowners to e-enable their entire supplier base in just a few weeks, we expect transaction numbers to go up even faster. Look out for more info on eSRM in the next month or so.

In this issue, you’ll hear real-life e-business success stories from a leading shipowner (Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc) and one of the largest maritime suppliers (FAMM – the marine lubricant division of ChevronTexaco). You’ll also learn about how International Marine Coatings is using ShipServ technology to create ship-board product catalogues.

Features in this issue:
– Fuel and Marine Marketing Lubricants (FAMM) joins ShipServ TradeNet
– Featured Shipowner – Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc.
– TradeNet conference in June
– International Marine Coatings adopts new Ship Supply Data Management Solutions
– ShipServ is hiring
– Coming Soon: TradeNet Supplier Guide
– New VP of Global Sales

Fuel and Marine Marketing Lubricants (FAMM) joins ShipServ TradeNet

On 12th of January 2004, FAMM opened its doors for trading on ShipServ TradeNet. FAMM is one of the world’s largest suppliers of marine lubricants and the first lubricant supplier to take the step towards full process and system integration with its customers on TradeNet.

“As part of our continuous effort to be a fast, flexible and innovative partner with focus on our customers, the marine business and operational excellence, integrating to ShipServ TradeNet was a natural next step for FAMM. TradeNet is designed to simplify and improve supply chain processes and therefore offers both customers and FAMM an opportunity to realise considerable efficiencies “, says Vince Kyle, VP and General Manager Lubricants, FAMM

With FAMM joining TradeNet, the trading platform further strengthens its unique position as the “one stop” access point for seamless system and process integration with leading global suppliers within any ship supply segment.

Other industry leaders on TradeNet within engine spares, paints, gases and chemicals, cargo handling, pumps, spare part sourcing and general ship supplies include MAN B&W, Wartsila, Hempel, International Coatings, Chugoku Paints, Ashland Drew, MacGREGOR, Hamworthy KSE, Allweiler, Aalborg Industries, Desmi, ISS Machinery Services, Fuji, Stromme, etc.

Featured Shipowner – Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc.

Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc. (“OSG”) one of the world’s largest bulk-shipping companies, owns and operates a modern tanker fleet of 52 vessels aggregating 9.2 million deadweight tons (“dwt”) comprised of international and U.S. flag vessels that transport crude oil, petroleum products and dry bulk commodities.

The technical management of the fleet is done from Newcastle, UK, where the purchasing department, headed by Paul Miller is situated. Their purchasing system is ABS, which has been integrated to ShipServ TradeNet.

“We have now been operational on ShipServ TradeNet for a while, and have very quickly realised the benefits of e-commerce. Enabling our suppliers electronically via ShipServ TradeNet makes it possible for us to import quotations and order confirmations directly into our ABS purchasing system which is improving our processes significantly”, says Paul Miller.

“Our suppliers have generally reacted positively to the fact that we have started up on e-commerce, and we expect that more of them will join TradeNet while we move ahead. Integrating systems and re-using data is an important asset for a modern shipping company today and in the future, and I believe we are on the right track already. ”

“The implementation took about 3-4 weeks, and with ShipServ’s experience in this field, we have felt very comfortable during the process”.

OSG is a good example of the implementation process that shipowners can expect. Most implementations are completed within a month.

International Marine Coatings adopts new Ship Supply Data Management Solutions.

International Marine Coatings has introduced a new worldwide product catalogue which is optimised for easy use onboard ships.

The catalogue uses ShipServ’s ‘ShipCat’ technology, and can be used on any ship’s PC (TradeNet member or not). The catalogue includes built-in features for creating and sending requisitions through ShipServ ShipLink Lite.

In addition, ShipServ TradeNet members enjoy the benefit of ShipLink Requisitions being sent directly to their in-house purchasing system. From there, the purchaser converts the requisition to a purchase order and sends it through TradeNet to the sales order system of International Marine Coatings, where the product names and descriptions are automatically recognised as coming from the catalogue.

This is just one example from the range of Ship Supply Data Management solutions available from ShipServ. The solutions help shipowners and suppliers optimise the quality of the product data throughout the Ship Supply Management transaction cycle, thereby reducing manual intervention and data correction at all cycle stages.
